What are the Different Types of Acne?
Whiteheads:
Small, raised bumps that have a white or yellowish head. They develop when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells.
Blackheads:
Open pores that appear black due to the oxidation of the oil and dead skin cells blocked inside. Contrary to popular belief, blackheads are not caused by dirt.
Papules:
Small, red bumps that can be tender to the touch. They occur when the walls of the hair follicles become inflamed.
Pustules:
Similar to papules, but with a white or yellowish pus-filled centre. They are formed when the hair follicle wall breaks down.
Nodules:
Large, painful lumps that develop under the skin. They occur when the hair follicle becomes deeply inflamed and can take longer to heal than other types of acne.
Cysts
Deep, pus-filled lesions that are often painful and can cause scarring. Acne removal for this type of acne can be a prolonged process, as nodules are the most severe type of acne and can take several weeks to heal.
